Bone Grafts

A bone graft or bone allograft transplants bone tissue. Surgeons use bone grafts and allografts to repair and rebuild diseased bones in your hips, knees, spine, legs and many other areas of your body. Grafts can also repair bone loss caused by some types of fractures or cancers. Allografts are typically used for general orthopedics, fracture management, total joint arthroplasty and spine surgery. Once your body accepts the bone graft, it provides a framework for new bone growth. If the transplanted bone comes from another person, it is called an allograft. If it comes from your own body it is an autograft. Most allograft bone comes from the precious gift of donation generously given by someone who died. Tissue banks rigorously screen donors, recover using aseptic technique,sterilize, and test the donated tissue before it is distributed for transplant. Standards for tissue can be found at the FDA, AATB and The Joint Commission.

Bone is the second most commonly transplanted tissue after blood transfusions. In the US, there are more than 500,000 bone grafting procedures each year. Over 200,000 of these procedures involve allografts.
