Skin Grafts
Allograft skin is utilized primarily as a temporary
covering for severe burns after debridement and prior to permanent skin
grafting. Donated skin helps prevent infection, reduce pain and maintain
body temperature. Available in meshed or non-meshed, the donor skin is
left in place for several days after application, then removed.
After rigorous testing and screening, Allograft (or cadaveric) skin is
harvested using a device called a dermatome. The skin is recovered at
a thickness of 15/100th of an inch and includes the epidermis and a portion
of the dermis. It is available in a variety of sizes from 100cm2 to 464cm2.
Allograft skin is not irradiated. It is cryo-preserved and stored at -40
C or lower.
Autograft vs. Allograft
Allograft skin is donor skin harvested from cadavers
and applied as a dressing for burn victims and patients with significant
skin loss from other diseases or conditions. Autograft skin comes from
the body of the patient and is harvested from an uninjured part of the
body to be transplanted or grafted onto a burned area.
